Can I keep a backpack with my suitcase on high speed trains?

I will transfer in Xian with a cabin bag and backpack. Is there overhead storage for both after boarding the bullet train?

Yes, you can and there is overhead storage for both. If your suitcase is big, there is also storage space between two cabins.
