Is this OK from Singapore for 72 hours visa free?

Singapore-Hong Kong-Beijing with Cathay Pacific, stay Beijing under 72 hours and then Beijing-Kuala Lumpur-Singapore with Malaysia Airlines. I know I can't do the same route both ways, need to attend a business meeting in Beijing and am looking for a work-round to avoid the bother of applying for one if possible. I really just want to fly Singapore-Beijing-Singapore.
