About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a Visa or can I use the 72 hour transit policy?

Hi- I am going from Hong Kong to Beijing, staying 24 hours in downtown Beijing hotel, then off to Tokyo the next day from Beijing. Thank you
