if i'm in china on tourist visa can i get a work z while i'm there if i find a job?

My plan is to travel on a tourist L and if I find a job I like(teaching English) I'd like to stay there and work. Would I be able to apply for the z while I'm there or would I need to leave the country?

You have to leave mainland to apply for a Z type. The L can not be changed into Z type while in here. But as I know, it is possible to apply for a Z in HK if returning back to NZ is out of your option.
