Trip to Badaling

Hi - I will be in Beijing in late Jan 2014 - and I know it will be cold but I have no choice of travel times. I have already been to the Mutianyu section so would like to recap on visiting the wall at Badaling. Just wondering - how long a full hike along the wall would approx take? If I start at the entrance and then hike one way and then get the cable car back - is this a good idea? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I am doing this solo - and not part of a tour - so time isnt urgent but obviously the more I plan prior the less time I will waste.

Thanks - Jeff

Yes. You can hike one way and take the cable car down. But I heard that the cable car in north has been closed recently and the cable car in south is available. It takes a couple of hours to hike the whole part of Badaling wall, so I think it is no need to take a cable car. This is my suggestion only for your reference.

Hey George - thanks for the info - appreciated. So its good to know that I can hike the whole wall but I am wondering if the entrance is in the middle or at one end of the wall. Meaning that if I start one way will I only be doing one half of the wall? So is the couple of hours hiking you mention for doing all or just half? And would this be a return walk as you mention not to bother with the cable car back. Sorry - not sure if I've explained myself properly - but curious.

Thanks for your time once again.

Jeff

Hi, after purchasing the tickets at the entrance, you will find there are two sides of the wall, one is south section and the other is north section. Most people choose to hike the north section as it is longer and much easier to climb. It takes about 3 hours to hike the full north side. If you like, you may visit the south section first and then retrace to hike the north section since you are able to get out of the wall from north side. It may take half day to hike the whole both sides, but it depends on your hiking pace and the crowd on the wall on that day. You may consider to take one way cable car to save your time and energy. Hope it helps.

Hi Jeff. Would you know if the cable car service at the North side of Badaling is available in January 2014?

No. The north side cable car is still not open. You may take the cable car on south side.
