Applying for a Chinese visa for a Japanese citizen

In November a Japanese colleague of mine will be traveling to Osaka, Japan from the USA. During his time in Japan, he will be traveling to China to give a lecture. Does this require a Chinese visa?

If he has a Japanese passport, he doesn't need a Chinese visa. He'll get a 1 or 2 week one at customs.
