You should inform your transit need with the Air Canada before boading the plane and fill a form with your information. The airline company will mail your information to the Beijing airport so that the free transit permit will be ready upon arrival.

What would one do if they have booked their flight using air miles and Aeroplan is no help with this matter.
How is one able to request for a free permit for themselves?

Don't worry, you just need to do this when you check in at the airport before boarding the plane to China.
