All you need to do is to tell the steward that you want to take 72 hours free transit at least 30 minutes in advance before the plane lands at the airport. The airline will inform the airport.

It is not a problem if you stay at a hotel. If you live with your Chinese friends, you should report to the local police station within 24 hours.
