About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a special visa or anything besides my passport and ID?

I am a US Citizen and will be flying from Okinawa to Hong Kong with a layover in between at Shanghai for few hours.

Nope, you don't provide other documents if you just stay for less than 24 hours.
