72 hour visa free itinerary: HK to Shanghai to S. Korea

Hello, I am a US passport holder flying from Hong Kong to Shanghai and then leaving for S. Korea less than 72 hours later. Is this a valid itinerary to take advantage of the 72 hour free policy?
