Can I get temporary residents with F visa?

Hello I am currently here in Beijing from the US with an F type for 180 days. I have been here for 70 or so days. I found a job here in Beijing and they are willing to sign a one year contract. However I am the first foreigner they have hired so they are not sure about the process. Can I get a temporary resident permit or do I need to go back to the US and apply for a Z type then come back and apply for temporary resident permit? Thanks for your help.

Previously, it's possible to change F/L to Z when you are in PRC. However, some people say that it's impossible after the new regulations come into effect. I think you might ask help from the agencies and see if they can do it for you. If they can't, I think you need to go back to the US and apply for the Z.
