I am a Canadian citizen who will be in Shanghai for less than 24 hours. Can I leave the airport without a visa?

Do you mean you are a Canadan citizen and need to make an international flight transfer at Pudong airport?
If so, you can get out of the airport without a visa.
But remember to contact your airline company to tell them that you need apply for 72-hour visa free service.2
