How dangerous is the smog in Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and Chengdu?

A recent article shows BJ looking like fog from the dense smog and says the small particles are dangerous for the lungs. We are bringing masks, but is that enough? I have allergies as well. What can be done in addition to masks?

It's reported that it is foggy in Beijing, and masked can be enough for your protection. In other cities you mentioned, it is fine. Don't worry! I am living in Xian by the way.
