If you stay within 72 hours, you may apply for the 72 hours free transit at Guangzhou airport when you fly from HK. The hours is counted from the 00:00 next day. If you stay more than 72 hours, a transit type one is needed and you should apply for it in advance before you fly from HK to Guangzhou.
