F type extension or new visa?

Hey, I'm currently spending an internship with a F type which will expire in the mid of August, after that I will study at a Chinese University until December. Is it possible to extend that F type at the Shanghai Bureau for Exit and Entry Administration? Or would it be better to apply for a new one, F or X? (If yes, is it more difficult or expensive to get a multiple entry one?) Please excuse those many questions ;)Thank you very much in advance! Steve

After the new Entry and Exit Regultions on foreigners came into effect on July 1, some changes have taken place. It's said that visa extension becomes too difficult. I think you may apply for a new X1 which allows you to stay for more than 180 days.

Thanks a lot for your answer! Just to clarify: Is it possible to apply for that X type in Shanghai as well? Most important for me is just that I don't have to leave Shanghai for the application process...

It is hard to say, but as I know, this conversion of types or new application can not be done within mainland. You may need to do this in HK instead, or through an agency if necessary.
