About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

can I apply for the visa before to go or do I need to wait to be closer to the date to do it?

I am planning to go to China next April buy first, I want to go to India, New Zealand and Japan, my trip will start in January.

It is too early to apply now becuase a single entry is only valid for 3 months from issue date. It expires before you use it in January.
If you travel to other countries first, you may try to apply while traveling. As I know, it is possible in Japan.

The best is to apply for it at the nearest Chinese consulate to your hometown. If you apply in a different country, there is a slight chance for rejection. Why take the chance?
Apply for a 12 month one instead.

After July 1 ,2013 . China has changed their policy. For my suggestion better apply at hometown before coming to China.
