Staying 72 hrs but rooming with a friend

If I'm staying 72 hours in Shanghai in transit from Vietnam but not staying in a hotel, but with a friend, how do I register? Do I have to go to the police office to register?

Yes, if you stay with your friend, you or your friend should go to register your stay to her/his local Police station.
