visit Macao from HK? or I need to travel via mainland

Hi, I am a British citizen who has booked to travel to Hong Kong for 10 days, I am also planning on going to Macau for a day trip. I understand that I don't need a visa for these two cities, but do I need one to get from Hong Kong to Macau? as i would need to travel via mainland PRC.
many thanks, Giuseppe
