Told to get Visitor Visa not Z

Hello,

I was just offered a high school math teacher position in Shanghai and I am rather excited. I am finishing up a year of teaching in Taiwan down south and the change will be interesting. My new employer has told me to get a Visitor Visa, not the Work Visa Z and that we will get the Z Visa once I am in country. Is this a fairly standard way to do things? I know China can be rather grey about a great many things.

Thanks!

I think the rules have changed as of July 1st, and you now have to return to your original country to have the visa issued.

I am not 100% sure, so don't quote me on this. Best to check it out.

Not sure about that. I am hoping I just need to fedex the materials to an agent. If not I can fly to Hong Kong and get one there.
