Invitation letter from an individual?

So, in response to Byran from France's response to Catherine from the USA's question.... we are in a similar situarion as Catherine. You said we could have an invitation letter from a Chinese individual? We are visiting a friend. Can he just send me an email to print out, or does it have to be very official. What does he need to say in the letter?
That would be ideal, because I didn't want to buy plane tickets yet if my visa doesn't get accepted or whatever.

The unofficial invitation letter from an individual is ok, but make sure include the following items:
1. Personal information of the applicant, such as name, gender, and date of birth.
2. Purpose of the visit, travel itinerary such as date of entry and exit, places of visit, relationship between the inviter and the applicant, and who will bear the expenses of the applicant.
Also, copies of inviter's ID Card is required if Chinese; Or passport information page, valid visa or residence permit if your friend is a foreigner.
Generally, a fax, copy or printout of invitation letter is acceptable.
