Yes, Round-trip ticket and hotel bookings are required for application without invitation letter from a Chinese travel agency or tourism bureau. If you do not have a clear plan, you can just book hotels in Guangdong for a few days. A single entry tourist L allows 30 days stay, so, you are suggested to book a return flight within 30 days.
