About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

Can I get an extension now from the San Francisco Chinese Consulate office, or should I just apply for a new visa? To get an extension, what form do I use?

My L type is set up for multiple entries of up to 30 days each. On my upcoming (second) visit, I wish to stay 45 days.

You can apply for a new one from the consulate. But L type one usually has 30 days duration time. If you plan to extend it, you should go to the local entry and exit management department at the police station when you arrive in China. It costs around CNY 160.
