72 hr TRANSIT VISA -- Overstay

I am an UK passport holder and entered China via Shanghai airport and was given a 72hr transit. I would like to extend for a extra 48 hours and wanted to know under what circumstances this may be possible. What are the likely penalties (financial or otherwise) if I just go to the airport 2 days late and try to exit.

Why not apply for one in advance if you really want to stay longer in Beijing? According to the rules, you need to extend it at local entry and exit management bureau if you can't leave in 72 hours. If you overstayed, you would be fined some money. I don't think you will be detained since you didn't overystay long time.
