About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Region classification, list for 72hours visa free?

It's totally unclear to me
the REGION DIVISION.

1. Which countries are part of the same region?
2. Where can I find a list of them?

e.g.
FLying from Taiwan, 72 hours free Shanghai, flying to the Philippines is it ok?
Flying from Korea, 72 hours free Shanghai, flying to the Philippines is it ok?
Flying from Korea, 72 hours free Shanghai, flying to Japan is ok?
Flying from Germany, 72 hours free Shanghai, flying to Uk is ok?

The answer here is not clear at all.

5,Does this measure apply to a foreign national coming to Beijing or Shanghai from a certain country (region) with a confirmed air ticket for flying back to the same country (region) where he or she comes from within 72 hours with confirmed date of flight and seat?

(China Embassy official Information)
Answer: According to the requirements, the 72-hour transit visa exemption measure is for a foreign national passing through Beijing or Shanghai(add. now Guangzhou too) for a third country or region. Therefore this measure does not apply to a passenger traveling from New York, USA, and stopping over at Beijing on his/her way to Los Angeles, USA.

According to the regulation, that means the country of departure and destination can not be the same. But I heard from my British friend that he was denied free transit permit when he took flight from Netherland to BJ with ticket back to UK. So, from the examples you listed here, the No.1 and No.2 are obviously ok and the itineraries are considered as a direct transit. No.3 and No.4 may be considered as a return trip.
