Is telling the airline at check in enough advance notice for 72 hr Transit Visa in Shanghai?

Will have an 18 hour layover in SH and want to take in some sites. We will be staying with friends so we will also have to register with our Transit Visa at a police station. What is the closest one to the airport?

Yes, it is enough advance telling the airline at the check in.
If you stay with your friend, you can ask your friend to register in a police office near your friend. It is not necessary to register in one close to the airport.
