Just wear neat and delicate clothes and take off hat to pay respect. Don't wear vests and slippers, or you will not be allowed to go into.

Most people in the queue wore completely casual tourist clothes and I didn't see anyone being stopped or hassled.

A few other tips:
- Mobile phones are allowed in, though obviously no picture taking.
- The place to leave bags is the tourist information office on the opposite side of the road down the east side of the square. The fee is 5-20 Yuan depending on the size of your bag.
- Noon seems to be when they stop people joining the queue rather than when the mausoleum closes.
- My ID wasn't checked.
