About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Taiwan/American

I am an American citizen who currently resides in Taiwan. do i need a Chinese visa to travel from Taipei to shanghai in order to catch my connecting flight in Germany?

You are allowed to stay 72 hours in Shanghai without visa if you have confirmed ticket to Germany.
