Buying tickets without passport

Hi
I am travelling from Shenzehn to Beijing on the 20th May. I am currently applying for a new passport which will arrive on the 17th May, can I book a train without my passport number if I provide it on the 17th?

The answer is no. You can book a flight ticket without passport number, but can't book a rail ticket.
