About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hi travelling from Brisbane then less than 72 hours in Shanghai and then onto London

I realise that we should okay but how do the immigration know that I am coming or is the visa free transit granted on arrival. I did read that we may need to inform the authorities in advance is that at the china airlines check in desk at Brisbane?
