traveling to shanghai for the weekend in may...

Hi! I'll be traveling to Shanghai with a friend in mid-May for the weekend. Do we need to apply for a visa and can we do it by ourselves?

Visa is required if you do a return trip, like Seoul-Shanghai-Seoul. And according to the requirements, you need to apply through a travel agency authorized by the embassy or consulate.
