Z to Tourist / L or other type?

Thanks for your help.
My Z / res permit and my work contract with my school end on the exact same day!
My questions...
1. Surely I cant be expected to depart the country on the exact same day? Given the date of expiry was out of my control - this is the school/governments doings (or whoever they are that issue it here? Police?)
2. Can my employer be trying to make me finish work early? My school tells me that they have asked about what can be done to give me a few weeks after the expiry to pack etc before leaving the country and tell me that the officers have said 'nothing can be done'. And also that I cant change to another type?
3. This cannot be correct can it? I'm in rural China and I have no way to find out. NO English speakers and no contact numbers etc.
4. If it is of any help - about 2 months ago I flew out to Thailand (so I have left the country) and also - I will have worked for 9 months not 1 year.
5. What are my options if I want to stay longer(i.e. not work - possibly travel for a bit)? For example, can I get a different L? and how/where?
