About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

I am australian citizen transiting Beijing . I have 23 hours transit time. Do I need visa?

I wish to visit the city. Do I need a permit to enter the city for few hrs before I board again at Beijing to Sydney? I am australian citizen . Kalpana
