we are planning a family holiday to china in mid may and would like to visit tibet alsoi wanted to know do we need special permit or separate visa for tibet ?

You need to get a Chinese tourist L and Tibet Travel Permit issued by Tibet Travel Bureau. For the application, you can get it in advance in your country, but for the permit, you need to apply through a Chinese travel agency after entry. So, you may contact any of them in advance for more information.
