72 hours visa free for Yangste River Cruise

If we go on a Yangste river cruise for a day from Shanghai is this deemed to be leaving Shanghai and so is the 72 hour free visa still allowed?

No, you are not allowed to leave Shanghai during 72 hours visa free period. In other words, you can just stay in Shanghai during this period.
