visa on arrival for a transit in Guangzhou from Indonesia to Australia

I have an air ticket to Australia from Indonesia with transit in Gangzhou but the transit time is quite long so I booked a hotel room at the airport hotel. It then occurred to me that I might need a visa. Do I need one to do this?
