Beijing on 2 separate bookings, visa free?

What about having separate bookings? I have a ticket London-Seoul and back BJ - London and I intend to buy a ticket from Japan to BJ and stay in BJ for less than 72 hours. So I will be flying from Japan to BJ and leaving to London. Do I qualify for visa free transit? The flight to BJ has a technical stop of 1 hour in Quingdao, do I still qualify for visa free?
