Stop over in Shanghai and want to get out of the airport

Hi,
Im travelling to Milan from Australia and am stopping in SH on the way there and the way back. One of the stop overs is 13 hours. I was thinking of getting a visa and leaving the airport for a look.
Is the city near by to Pudong Airport? And if so, which is the best form of transportation as I only have a few hours?

First I can tell you that, if you just make a transfer in SH, the visa is not needed.
For go into the downtown area, you can take the subway line 2 in about an hour to reach Lujiazui in Pudong district to see the Oriental Pearl Tower or go to East Nanjing Road and then go to the Bund for a short visit.
