Also will love some information on trains. My schedule will be Beijing for 3 nights - Xian for 2 nights - Guilin for 2 nights and Shanghai for 4 nights. Is this enough time to stay on each city?

I think you can buy your tickets at any time if you find some discount of the flight tickets.One of my friend went to USA in July and she bought the tickets three monthes in advance. Generally speaking, the price will be cheap from March to May.3 days are enough for you to travel in general about the city and 2 days are OK for Xian. 2 days are not enough for Guilin. If you go to Guilin, Yangshuo is a must seeing place. I suggest you to spend three days and then to Shanghai. 2 days are OK for Shanghai, in my opinion.
