Cruise ship visit to China

My husband and I are going on a Far East cruise and will visit soon. We shall only need a single visa..which I think is 40 USD.
As we live in Bulgaria we thought that we would go to Chinese Embassy in Sofia.....must we pay in dollars or can we pay in leva please
