F to L within China or I have to do this in Hong Kong

Hi, is it possible o change my visa from an F (180 days, single entry, business) to an L within china or is it true that I have to go toHK to get this done?

I am asking because I hav been studying in china so far, but id like to travel around the country and my F ends in february.
