72 Hour Visa exemption for Shanghai

My wife and I are flying to Shanghai from London (UK) in April 2013, staying 2 nights, and then departing on a cruise ship to South Korea. The total time in Shanghai is less than 72 hours.
Will the exemption apply to us or do we still have to apply for visas?

You need to apply for a visa in advance becuase the policy requires an exit from Shanghai airports only.
