Have travel itinerary with flight info but not book hotel room yet, can I get Chinese Visa?

I have a U.S. Passport and planning to travel to China to see the Great Wall, I have a travel itinerary from AAA with all the flight information (leaving from JFK to Beijing) and have not booked the hotel yet.
Can I get the Chinese Visa for the travel? Is there any other document that I may need to get it?

The visa officers have the final say to your application actually, you'd better prepare a hotel reservation for first few nights if possible. Anyway, if you have invitation letter from a China travel agency, hotel bookings is not required then. Other basic requirements are your passport, application form and photo.
