If your itinerary is UK-Beijing-Uk, you still have to apply for a visa for that; if your itinerary is Uk-Beijing-a third country, then you can enjoy the visa waiver policy.

thanks for your reply however my travel plans are that we fly to hong kong then to signapore take a cruise for 2 weeks ending up in honk kong then fly to bejing for 60 hour 3 night stay then fly back to hong kong then home to heathrow. Will this allow us to benefit for the visa waiver?

Your itinerary is special, since your third destination is HK. I advise you confirm with the China embassy in UK directly.
