About:Chinese Embassy in Australia

Ive been told that if I visit China, I will need an invitation or to be part of a tour group

Is this correct. I would be travelling with my partner who has friends there.

It is ok, but you need to provide round-trip ticket and hotel reservation instead if you will travel on your own.
