Visa requirements for visiting Hainan

I am a U.S. citizens living and working in South Korea. I want to visit Hainan this winter, but am confused about what the requirements are. I visited mainland China about six years ago and got a regular visa, but I understand that the requirements are different when visiting Hainan.
