overnight layover, do we need a visa?

My family and I are US citizens living in Okinawa Japan. We are taking a family vacation to Thailand. We have two layovers in China.. In Shanghai (3 hrs) and Kunming (17 hrs). Do we need visas for an overnight stay in Kunming?

Because you will stop at two airport during this transit, you need to apply for a Stay Permit when you arrive at the Shanghai Airport. With the permit, visa is not required for both stopovers.
