Does an overnight layover require a visa?

Hi there. I am an Australian/Polish citizen and flying through Guangzhou from Australia to London on Christmas eve with Southern China on an overnight stopover. I would like to book into the Pullman airport hotel, but not sure if i need a visitors visa for a 24 hour entrance into the country to do so. If so how do I go about doing this?

You do need to apply for a China transit visa from the local embassy or consulate-general of China before your departure for your transit in Guangzhou.
