If you want to go out of the airport, you can either apply for a transit visa in advance from CHinese embassy/consulate, or apply for a 24 hour stay permit when you arrive at the airport. BTW, if you transit in Shanghai, you are visa free for 48 hours and you are allowed to visit the city.
