We , 4-5 Malaysians would like to travel overland from Yunnan to Tibet in May 2013. How do we apply for visas?

You need to apply for a tourist visa firsit, then apply for a Tibet Entry Permit issued by TTB through a China travel agency. The permit can only be processed in the week before entry Tibet. For visa, a single entry is valid for 3 months from issue date, so you can apply in late March or April.
