Visa application requirements for my holiday to China

I have a question, I need to obtain a tourism visa for my holiday in china. However, my boyfriend have invited me there, what should he write and provide to the immigration officer in the Embassy. The list they write need a full name, detail of address and passport. However my boyfriend do not have a passport. I am citizen in New Zealand. I need to know is it hard the inviter to obtain everything or i should just book a ticket, accommadation and travel insurance.
